A CUP OF INTOXICATION: The Five Crescents and the New Cold War
Zechariah 12:2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
King James Version

It’s a tough neighbourhood that Israel lives in. Four warring factions, all of which have committed major violence against one another . . . but all (except the Kurds) agree on one thing: They hate Israel.
Roxane Farmanfarmaian, a Senior Research Fellow at the Global Policy Institute, published a very revealing article in Al Jazeera entitled: “Redrawing the Middle East map: Iran, Syria and the new Cold War. . . .”(15 Nov. 2012).
She identifies the complex set of cleavages that are now forming in the ‘new Middle East’. The constellation of alliances, conflicts and weaponry is vastly more lethal and complex than those that set off the conflagration which became the First and Second World Wars.
In the middle, sits tiny Israel . . . facing constant threats of extermination.
Farmanfarmaian identifies: 1) The Shia Crescent [the Iranian sphere-of-influence] 2) The Sunni Crescent [Saudi Arabia and allies] 3) the New Moderates [Democracy and economic development vs. radical Islam] 4) the Kurdish Crescent and 5) The Eastern Mediterranean Crescent (Israel and European interests).
Farmanfarmaian’s otherwise excellent article nonetheless exposes her anti-Israeli bias in phrases such as: “Yet, the United States will inevitably stay in the Middle East. This is not just because of oil. Nor is it because of what Samuel Huntington called the “Clash of Civilizations” or what others might call terrorism, . . . although events in Benghazi which led to the death of US Ambassador Chris Stevens serve to remind that social and cultural differences can still easily lead to tragedy. . .” [blogger’s emphasis]
And using all the typical anti-Israeli propaganda slogans of ‘occupied territories’, ‘illegal settlements’, ‘ratcheting up the war rhetoric,’ she ascribes the Israeli motive as “. . . To offset this malaise, Israel is looking to Europe, where it feels more welcome than it has ever felt in the Middle East.” (Ask any Israeli or American Jew how ‘welcome’ he or she has felt in Europe over the past 70 years.)
Nonetheless, she otherwise accurately describes the spinning kaleidoscope of ancient and modern conflicts that are drawing the world’s superpowers into what she calls the ‘second Arab cold war’. I believe that is accurate but it is important to note that many of the world’s most prominent military high commands are convinced that a ‘hot war’ (nuclear) is an INEVITABLE outcome of this cold war .
Russia, China and the declining USA are being drawn into this vortex described 2500 years ago by several exiled Jews (Biblical books of Daniel, Ezekiel and Zechariah for example).
These are all nuclear powers and now, so are Israel and Iran.

Thus, the most likely site of the world’s first regional nuclear war is identified and described. It was where civilization was born and where civilization will see its most devastating global conflict.
I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army . . . 5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops — many people are with you . . . In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. . . 9 You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.” 10 . . . you will make an evil plan . . . Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’”’. . . says the Lord GOD “. . . My fury will show in My face. 19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, 20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’ 21 I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains,” says the Lord GOD. “Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23 Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations.
Then they shall know that I am the LORD.”’
